A procedure for irrigating the mucosae of the vagina and cervix uteri with oxygen-saturated (oxygenated) solution of an antiseptic (chlorhexidine or metronidazole) was used in the combination therapy of 24 patients with bacterial infection of the lower genital tract in the presence of bacterial vaginosis. A control group comprised 24 patients having the same diagnosis - they received local treatment with unoxygenated solutions of the same antiseptics. The local use of oxygenated solutions of antibacterial agents (0.05% chlorhexidine solution or 0.5% metronidazole solution) in the combination treatment of mixed bacterial infection of the lower genital tract accompanied by evolving vaginosis was ascertained to cause a more marked therapeutic effect (relief of inflammatory manifestations, recovery of vaginal biocenosis and local humoral immunity) than that of unoxygenated solutions of the similar antiseptics. This permits recommendation of this method as alternative therapy for vulvovaginitis, cervicitis, and bacterial vaginosis.
