Abstract:

One hundred and twenty patients aged 31.9±1.4 years with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and a 5.3±1.2-year history of infertility were examined. A control group consisted of 20 reproductive-age women with a regular ovulatory menstrual cycle. The diagnosis of PCOS was verified by histological studies of the ovarian biopsy specimens obtained during laparoscopy. Oligomenorrhea was present in 61 (50.8%) patients, amenorrhea in 30 (25%), dysfunctional uterine bleeding in 12 (10%), and regular menstruations in 17 (14.2%). In patients with PCOS, the blood concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, and LH/follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) ratio were higher and the contents of FSH, progesterone, estradiol, and sex steroid-binding globulin were lower than those in the controls. The levels of prolactin, cortisol, and 17-hydroxyprogesterone did not significantly differ from those in the control group. The increased free estrogen index in patients with PCOS may be indicative of occult hyperestrogenism.
