There are up to now unresolved problems concerning the diagnostics and treatment of extraintestinal manifestations of celiac disease as well as the mechanisms underlying the development of pathological changes in various organs and their systems associated with this condition. The numerous investigations have demonstrated that the rhinocytograms of the patients presenting with celiac disease are characterized by the high frequency of the pronounced destructive changes in neutrophils and epithelial cells that may play an important role in the formation of the disturbances of the local protection of the mucous membrane of the upper respiratory tract resulting in the dysfunction of its protective mechanisms and chronization of the inflammatory processes in the upper respiratory tract. The atrophic changes in the nasal cavity mucosa appear to be secondary but pathogenetically associated with the celiac disease. Therefore, it can be concluded that the state of the mucous membrane of the intranasal cavity in the patients suffering from the celiac disease is to a large extent dependent on the character of nutritional therapy that promotes normalization of the morphofunctional disorders in the mucous membrane of the small intestines. This conclusion suggests that nutritional therapy produced the anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory action by virtue of the elimination of gluten from the dietary intake.
