GOAL OF INVESTIGATION

To study the features of the expression of estrogen (ER-α) and progesterone (PR-A) receptors in the epithelium and stroma of the endometrioid infiltrate (EI) and capsules of the endometrioid ovarian cyst in first detected and recurrent external genital endometriosis (EGE).

MATERIAL AND METHODS

88 patients with EGE were examined, out of them, 48 women had a recurrence of EGE (main group). The study included 40 women with first detected EGE (comparison group). All patients with EGE in the proliferative phase of the menstrual cycle underwent surgical intervention using a laparoscopic access: excision/destruction of endometrioid infiltrates/heterotopias, resection of the ovary (removal of the capsule of the endometrioid cyst). Biological material obtained during surgical operation were subjected to histological and immunohistochemical study to determine the expression levels of steroid receptors of the hormones.

RESULTS

In patients with recurrent EGE in the epithelium of the endometriomas there are revealed a statistically significant increase in the expression of ER-α and PR-A, compared with patients with newly diagnosed EGE. At the same time, there is a slight decrease in the expression of ER-α and PR-A in the endometriomas stroma compared to patients with newly diagnosed EGE (p>0.05). Increased expression of ER by epithelial cells, as well as an imbalance between the expression of ER-α and PR-A in epithelial and stromal cells of endometrioid ovarian cysts may be among the most important causes of progression and recurrence of endometriosis.
