The safety of various contraceptive methods in smokers is assessed in the present review Such risks as venous thrombosis and other cardiovascular diseases are discussed. Comparative analysis of the literature indicates that levonorgestrel-intrauterine system can be regarded as the best method of contraception in smokers. As with any other contraceptive it must be used in accordance with the indications and contraindications, individually and specifically for each patient, taking into account age, co-morbidities, the state of the reproductive system.
