OBJECTIVE

To compare the incidence of postoperative complications in surgical treatment of postoperative ventral hernias and anterior abdominal wall deformities combined with panniculectomy.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The study included 135 patients between 2019 and 2023. They were divided into 2 groups. Group 1 (main) included 67 obese patients who underwent ventral hernia repair and anterior abdominal wall deformity with simultaneous panniculectomy. Group 2 (control) included 68 patients who underwent ventral hernia repair only. Mean follow-up was 141 days.

RESULTS

The incidence of complications was similar in both groups. Both groups had similar rates of complications requiring interventions (11.94% and 11.76%; p=0.962). Multivariate analysis revealed that simultaneous panniculectomy together with hernia repair did not increase the risk of complications.

CONCLUSION

Surgical treatment algorithm involves hernia repair using original approaches. The last ones improve conditions for interventions in patients with obesity and anterior abdominal wall deformation. Postoperative ventral hernia repair and correction of anterior abdominal wall deformities with simultaneous panniculectomy do not increase the risk of postoperative complications.
