For decades, scientists and clinicians have been searching for the ideal autogenous donor material to eliminate defects in various surgical interventions in the maxillofacial region. Since the second half of the 20th century, the scientific community has turned its attention to the buccal fat pad, proving the possibility of its effective use for these purposes. Despite the successful results of scientific works, more research is required to study in detail the anatomy and possibilities of using the buccal fat pad in various surgical interventions of the maxillofacial area. This article presents a modern view on the structure, function and use of the buccal fat pad both in surgical dentistry and maxillofacial surgery in particular, and in dentistry and medicine in general.
