Moisturizing skin care is an important part of local treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD). Aim: To evaluate effectiveness and tolerance of 7% ectoine cream in complex treatment of persistent skin lesions in children with atopic dermatitis of mild to moderate severity. Material and methods. Prospective open controlled study with pair-matching control. This study included sixty patients at the age from 7 to 14 years (55% of children were less than 3 years old). Pairs were matched based on gender, age, severity of AD. Groups received the same pharmacological treatment of AD. Results. In the primary group SCORAD index decreased by 36% in mild AD, by 67% in moderate AD; area of persistent lesions — by 64 and 42% respectively; hyperemia — by 76 and 44%; excoriations — by 43 and 54%; itching — by 71 and 68% respectively (all differences are significant in comparison with the control group). Tolerance of the cream was evaluated as good; side effects (pinching, itching after application) resulted in denying the treatment in one patient, and in two patients, these symptoms resolved by themselves and did not result in withdrawing the treatment. Conclusion. In children, which had 7% ectoine cream added to the standard local pharmacological treatment of mild to moderate AD, in comparison with the control group, we noted a significant positive effect on AD symptoms and on decreasing of the area of fixed lesions, which existed more than 1 month before the patient, was included in this study. These effects were achieved without increasing the extent of pharmacological treatment.
