Abstract:

The article presents the results of surgical treatment of 5 patients with bilateral hemodynamically significant stenosis of the carotid arteries and a concomitant heart disease requiring surgical treatment. Additionally the authors studied international experience in simultaneous bilateral carotid endarterectomy. The main technical features of the operations are described, the complications are analyzed, and the indications for the use of this technique are formulated in the article. It is concluded that the use of simultaneous bilateral carotid endarterectomy is currently justified only in very limited group of critically ill patients with concomitant heart disease requiring surgical treatment. Every operation is associated with a very high risk of complications and death in these patients.
