Abstract:

BACKGROUND

Despite the improvement of surgical treatment methods, postoperative complications still an acute problem in modern surgery. Reduced reparative processes, because of neoadjuvant treatment and the presence of comorbidities, characterize the general condition of cancer patients. This affects the postoperative period of this category of patients.

DESCRIPTION OF A CLINICAL CASE

A case of successful treatment of a cancer patient with the background of severe comorbid diseases after extensive surgery complicated by the failure of the esophagoenteroanastomosis connecting with the abdominal cavity and mediastinum is presented.

DISCUSSION

Complications in this group of patients are associated with high mortality, increased hospitalization and delayed initiation of adjuvant chemotherapy. The use of modern minimally invasive techniques, including vacuum therapy, increases the likelihood of a favorable outcome of the postoperative period in the event of surgical complications.

CONCLUSIONS

The use of a vacuum drainage system for the treatment of leackage in patients with severe comorbidities after surgery on the esophagus and stomach is an effective and relatively safe technique, even with a large damage.
