OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the capabilities of the endoscopic papillectomy as a treatment option for benign ampullary tumors.

MAIN POINTS

An ampullary adenoma is the most common benign ampullary tumor. Pancreaticoduodenectomy or transduodenal ampullectomy are interventions with high morbidity and mortality rate; hence cannot be front-line therapy for benign ampullary tumors. Nowadays, endoscopic papillectomy is the less invasive alternative for the treatment of ampullary adenoma.

CONCLUSION

Detailed preoperative examination and patient selection is the key to successful endoscopic treatment.
