BACKGROUND

Local anaesthetics use in the practice frequently. Although these drugs are safe their using may result in adverse effects that may be life-threatening.

OBJECTIVE

We investigated the opportunity of articaine using in relation to lidocaine intolerance in patients who needed paravertebral injection for pain relief.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

One hundred and seven patients who are suffered chronic back pain were received course of paravertebral injections of local anaesthetics in out-hospital settings. In this reason five out of these six patients were taken injections with articaine instead of lidocaine. For an exclusion of allergy to articaine provocative skin tests were executed.

RESULTS

Six from 107 (5.6%) patients had pointed out intolerance after lidocaine using. One patient refused the articaine using. No side effects including allergy were obtained after articaine injections.

CONCLUSIONS

1. Lidocaine intolerance was noted by approximately 5.6% patients with back pain who has visited to the pain management centre. 2. In the cases of lidocaine intolerance this one can be superseded by articaine including paravertebral injections for pain relief.
