To analyze the available literature data on the impact of joint stay of children and parents in the intensive care unit on duration of treatment, incidence of complications and long-term consequences for quality of life of a patient and family.
We searched scientific data in the Medline, Cochrane and eLIBRARY.ru databases using the following keywords: “children” AND “ICU” OR “posttraumatic stress disorder” AND “PICS”. Searching was carried out between September 2020 and January 2021. Searching depth was 20 years.
We analyzed 146 manuscripts and included 99 references into this review. Joint stay of children and parents in the intensive care unit reduces duration of ICU treatment, severity of stress in patients and their families. In addition, negative influence of environmental factors in the intensive care unit on child development is also reduced.
Joint stay of children and parents in the intensive care unit is a promising measure to prevent ICU-associated complications. This issue requires further study.
