Abstract:

The review paper draws attention to diagnostic difficulties of intrauterine infection in pregnant women. Ultrasonography, Doppler study, and cardiotocography are most informative among noninvasive techniques for prenatal diagnosis. Histologic examination of the placenta, umbilical cord, and fetal membranes is the gold standard for the diagnosis of intrauterine infection. Over the last decade, the main diagnostic techniques for intrauterine infection have included bacteriological, virological, and immunological examinations and molecular biology tests (identification of microorganisms and detection of immunoglobulins specific to a given pathogen, certain DNA or RNA fragments in the pathogen cells). Investigations of a group of proteins produced by fetal syncytiotrophoblast and tissues, as well as changes in the cytokine system, activity of middle molecule growth factors are promising for the diagnosis of intrauterine infection. Emphasis is laid on screening tests used in newborn infants at high risk for intrauterine infection, such as microscopic examination of amniotic fluid, bacteriological examinations of umbilical cord blood, neonatal gastric contents, and, in some cases, neonatal capillary blood culture. The final diagnosis after childbirth is based on the results of microbiological and histological studies. The authors declare no conflicts of interest.
