Objective. To assess a method for the prophylaxis of recurrent herpetic infection in pregnant women with antihomotoxic therapy as a means of preventing intrauterine fetal infection, by applying the methodological standards of evidence-based medicine. Subjects and methods. Ninety-two women at high risk for intrauterine fetal infection underwent pregravid preparation for 3 months and a periodic antihomotoxic therapy cycle during pregnancy. Comparison groups comprised 126 pregnant women with recurrent herpetic infection who were treated with local and systemic episodic acyclovir treatment and 185 pregnant women with recurrent herpetic infection who refused treatment. A control group included 30 healthy pregnant women and their newborn infants. To monitor the fetoplacental unit, the investigators performed a Doppler ultrasound study, cardiotocography and determined the levels of CD95+ and CD25+ lymphocytes, tumor necrosis factor-, placental growth factor, and placental 1-microglobulin in the pregnant women's and umbilical cord bloods. Results. Preventive antihomotoxic therapy used in women with recurrent herpetic infection was found to prevent the latter in 95.7% of the cases and to have a fetoprotective effects in reducing the risk of intrauterine infection by 22.5 times. Conclusion. The proposed method has shown a high efficiency in preventing the recurrences of herpetic infection in pregnant women and those of intrauterine fetal infection.
