Abstract:

The course of pregnancy and labor and neonatal status were studied in 62 pregnant women with baseline low dietary calcium intakes (DCI), who received no calcium preparations during pregnancy and in 54 pregnant women with baseline low DCI, who had been continuously taking Calcium D3 Nycomed since early pregnancy. The efficiency of preventive use of calcium preparations and vitamin D3 was evaluated comparing blood calcium concentrations, the frequency and nature of pregnancy and labor complications and neonatal status in the examined groups. The authors established extremely low median DCI (438.5 mg/day), high dietary calcium deficiency rates (95.2%), and a considerable impact of inadequate calcium intake by pregnant women on the development of gestosis and threatening miscarriage. They proved the efficiency of adequate pharmacological correction of inadequate DCI during early pregnancy as a significant reduction of the risk of gestosis, threatening miscarriage, abnormal labor, and fetal and neonatal impairments.
