Abstract:

Lipid peroxidation (LPO) and antioxidant protection system (AOPS) were studied in 80 patients aged 49 to 55 years without clinical manifestations of the climacteric syndrome (CS). Primary examination showed that 46 (57%) patients had higher values of free radical oxidation (diene conjugates, triene conjugates, and Schiff bases) and decreased activity of antioxidant enzymes (catalase, superoxide dismutase). Restudy of LPO and AOPS, conducted 6 months after primary one, indicated that the clinical manifestations of CS were observed only in the patients having the signs of oxidative stress on primary examination. The signs of perimenopausal oxidative stress may be a prognostic criterion for the severity of CS.
