Abstract:

OBJECTIVE

Development and assessment of the efficacy of pharyngeal tonsil’s organ-preserving cold-plasma ablation in patients with retronasal obstruction.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

The study involved 26 patients aged 3 to 8 years who were examined for surgical intervention for nasal obstruction due to pharyngeal tonsil hypertrophy. The patients were randomly assigned to 2 groups: Group 1 included children who underwent partial ablation of the pharyngeal tonsil, and Group 2 included those who underwent radical ablation of the pharyngeal tonsil. The postoperative pain syndrome (9 days) and the duration of nasal symptoms over the subsequent 6 months were assessed.

RESULTS

10 children in each cohort reported pain on the day after surgery. The pain intensity in both groups was assessed at 0-2 points. All children reported no sore throat from Day 6 in Group 1 and Day 8 in Group 2. The number of days with nasal symptoms throughout 6 months during monthly assessments did not show a statistically significant difference between the groups.

CONCLUSIONS

Organ-preserving surgery of the pharyngeal tonsils with cold plasma ablation under chronic inflammation conditions is feasible, justified, and adequate.
