Prospects for phytotherapy of acute rhinitis

OBJECTIVE

To review the literature on current therapies for acute rhinitis/common cold and describe the role of natural drugs, including Pelargonium sidoides (EPs 7630).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A search for scientific publications was performed in the Cochrane Library, RSCI, MEDLINE, and PubMed databases using keywords common cold, acute rhinitis, common cold treatment, phytotherapy for acute rhinitis, Pelargonium sidoides.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSION

The data from clinical studies indicate the superiority of Pelargonium sidoides (EPs 7630) versus placebo in reducing the severity of symptoms and the duration of acute rhinitis/common cold. Also, the Pelargonium sidoides root extract (EPs 7630) was shown to be effective in the complex therapy of acute rhinitis/common cold.
