According to WHO, lack of medication adherence is an urgent issue of current health care and one of the aspects lowering the effectiveness of rhinosinusitis polyposa (RSP) therapy. However, to date, no studies have been performed on the impact of individual personality features on medication adherence and therapy efficacy in patients with RSP.

OBJECTIVE

To improve the postoperative therapy efficacy in RSP patients.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

A total of 147 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of RSP were included. A quantitative assessment of patient complaints was performed using a visual analogue scale. In addition, the study included optical nasal endoscopy, assessment of nasal cavity patency (Otopront GmbH), nasal mucociliary clearance, and computed tomography of the nose and paranasal sinuses. The standardized SinoNasal Outcome Test-22 (SNOT-22) questionnaire was used to determine the impact of RSP on patients’ quality of life. The Morisky-Green scale was used to determine medication adherence. A personal and situational (reactive) anxiety self-assessment was performed using the Spielberger-Hanin anxiety test. Analysis of symptoms and clinical and functional examination results were performed in all patients before surgery and after 6 and 12 months.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSION

Patients with RSP show a decrease in medication adherence 6 months after surgery. Patients with low medication adherence have high levels of personal and situational anxiety. The developed mobile app is an effective way to increase medication adherence and improve self-management of RSP symptoms.
