Skin melanoma remains an acute problem of global public healthcare and one of the most prevalent malignant neoplasms of the skin with a potentially poor prognosis.

OBJECTIVE

To analyze epidemiological aspects of skin melanoma in Samara Region from 2014 to 2022 yrs.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The study materials included the annual reports of state statistics Form No. 7, “Information on malignant neoplasms”, of Samara Regional Clinical Oncological Dispensary for 2014—2022 yrs. The main epidemiological characteristics (prevalence, incidence, mortality) were calculated and analyzed regarding age, gender, and territory (region, urban population, rural population).

RESULTS

The skin melanoma prevalence analysis for 2014—2022 yrs showed an increase in prevalence in the overall Samara region (+33.6%) and in urban (+32.5%) and rural (+37.8%) populations. The incidence of skin melanoma shows an upward trend in rural areas (+28.2%) and overall in the region (+3.6%), and a slight downward trend in urban areas (–1.2%). The incidence notably increases after 50, with the maximum levels in the age groups of 65—69 and 70+ years. Skin melanoma more often affects women (61.6±2.6% on average). The mortality related to melanoma increased in rural areas (by 3.5 times) and overall in the region (by 1.5 times) and decreased in the cities of Samara region (by 19%).

CONCLUSION

The continued increase in skin melanoma prevalence, incidence, and mortality in the Samara Region population determines the need for organizational and preventive measures to reduce them.
