Three hundred and ninety-eight teachers and school employees of five Moscow schools were examined within a cross-sectional study. The mean age of the women was 45 years and that of the men was 40 years. The study program included a medical examination, a questionnaire survey, and Reeder's psychological stress test. 17% of the women and 36% of the men were smokers. Overweight and obesity were found in 63.1% of the women and in 65.8% of the men. 79.5% of the women and 66.7% who were exposed to stress assessed their health as satisfactory and poor. The elementary school teachers experienced stress most of all. The school employees who had stress used much less commonly medical information on health promotion, new treatment options and drugs and consulted their near relations and friends more frequently. Both the men and the women who did not experience stress, unlike those who had stress, monitored physical and mental loads more commonly and controlled their feelings and emotions. Stress has a negative effect on the interest of general school employees in improving their health and in complying with the principles of a healthy lifestyle. The school employees experiencing stress have no protective mechanisms or stress resistance and show no health-saving behavior.
