Abstract:

Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is a rare tumor of the digestive system. GIST does not show any specific symptoms. These tumors are usually asymptomatic for a long time and can present with bleeding or obstruction, which causes the patient to seek medical advice, as well as when he/she himself/herself finds a larger tumor. Treatment is sometimes denied wrongfully to such patients. The results of treatment in patients with GIST largely depend on the quality of the performed surgical intervention and on the determination of tumor susceptibility to adjuvant therapy. The paper gives an example of successful treatment in a patient with a large GIST.
