Cutaneous manifestations in rheumatic diseases (rheumatic nodules, erythema rings, erythema nodosum, etc.) can be the first manifestations and an indicator of disease activity. The leading clinical manifestation of rheumatic diseases is a joint syndrome, but it is extra-articular manifestations, such as lesions of the skin, nails, hair, mucous membranes, and eyes, that may indicate a generalized inflammatory response. Cutaneous vasculitis may be an extra-articular manifestation due to cytokine and autoantibody damage to the vascular endothelial wall during the active phase of inflammation. Generally, rheumatic diseases are characterized by the onset at a young age, systemic lesions, a chronic, steadily progressing course, early disability, and the development of life-threatening complications.
