Abstract:

In recent decades, a variety of fillers has been developed for the correction of aging signs. Such fillers include bovine and human collagen, hyaluronic acid (HA)-based agents, calcium hydroxyapatite, poly-L-lactic acid, silicone, etc. HA-based fillers are known to have beneficial features, so they dominate among the materials for the cosmetic correction of soft tissue defects. Despite the proven efficacy and safety of HA-based fillers, the risk of infectious complications of filling injections (FI) using these agents is steadily increasing. Post-procedure complications of FI can be classified as early, late and delayed according to the time of their occurrence after the filler injection. We present a clinical case of recurrent inflammation in the facial area after HA-based gel treatment of the nasolabial folds and zygomatic regions in a patient with persistent Epstein-Barr infection. The diagnosis was verified by a comprehensive clinical, laboratory, and instrumental examination, using highly informative methods of the immune status assessment and blood culture. A complex two-stage pathogenetic treatment resulted in the reconstruction of the facial tissues structure and improvement of the patient’s life quality.
