Oral mucosal diseases occur in about 50% of cases and are characterized by typical (painless, whitish and reticulate) and atypical (painful erosive, ulcerative and other) eruptions. Treatment of atypical lichen planus (ALP) of the oral cavity is a complex problem. Combined treatment should be conducted using systemic corticosteroids, cyclosporine, thalidomide, and other drugs that are not effective enough or often cause side effects and complications. In this regard, calcineurin and inflammatory mediator inhibitors have recently been used in treatment of atypical ALP of the oral cavity. A clinical case of highly efficient combined therapy of erosive ALP of the oral cavity using calcineurin and inflammatory mediator inhibitors in the form of 0.03% tacrolimus ointment is presented.
