OBJECTIVE

To assess the effectiveness and safety of high-frequency jet ventilation (HFV) during one-lung ventilation in MIDCAB/MICS.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The study included 44 patients with coronary artery disease who underwent MIDCAB/MICS. Two groups of patients were distinguished depending on the type of respiratory support: group A (n=21) — control group with the collapsed lung; group B (n=23) — study group with HFV. We analyzed intraoperative and early postoperative periods in both groups.

RESULTS

We observed higher SpO2 and other respiratory parameters during one-lung ventilation in group B. There was no difference in postoperative respiratory complications, length of ICU-stay and duration of mechanical ventilation.

CONCLUSION

HFV of the collapsed lung improves oxygenation, reduces the number of desaturation episodes (SpO2 <94%) and overall incidence of postoperative respiratory complications.
