Abstract:

The efficacy of the conservative treatment of acute venous thrombosis depends on reliable diagnosis and adequate anticoagulation therapy. The correct choice of the diagnostic modality for each concrete case is of crucial importance to enable the physician to determine localization, extent, and characteristic features of the proximal part of the thrombus. Anticoagulant agents have the most pronounced effect on the clinical course and the outcome of the disease. Heparin of various molecular mass and vitamin K antagonists remain the principal medications for treatment of the patients with acute venous thrombosis. It is emphasized that the choice of the optimal dose and duration of adequate anticoagulants in combination with the proper laboratory control of the on-going treatment are the indispensable conditions for the efficient and safe therapy.
