Abstract:

Experience with electromuscular stimulation (EMS) for the treatment of patients with chronic venous oedema is analysed. The study included 30 patients (32 legs) with C3SEps (by international CEAP classification). EMS was performed during 30 days on the following schedule: days 1-10 - 3 daily NMS procedures (morning, afternoon, evening), days 11-20 – 2 daily EMS procedures (morning and evening), days 21-30 - one evening procedure (evening). On day 35, circumference of the epimalleolar segment decreased by 20.3 cm and venous pain by more than two-fold while global index of life quality increased by 49.9%. Photopletismography revealed a 4.2 s rise in retrograde filling time. It is concluded that EMS is an efficacious procedure for the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency in the lower extremities well tolerated by the patients.
