Increased body temperature often occurs in critically ill patients. A number of diseases and conditions are obligatory associated with increased body temperature, e.g. pancreatitis, sepsis, intraventricular hemorrhage, cervical spinal cord injury. The course of some conditions (e.g. malignant hyperthermia, heat illness, or thyrotoxicosis) is not possible without increased body temperature. Approaches to temperature management are still being discussed in many respects. Treatment of critically ill patients with increased body temperature is often facing regular issues like for whom and how to manage body temperature, to what level to reduce temperature, how long to maintain such level, what rate of warming should be used, etc. This paper through a review of literature addresses relevant issues that are commonly raised by the intensivists regarding temperature management in an intensive care unit.
