Abstract:

The investigation was undertaken to study the effect of microdose combined oral contraceptives (COC) on the serum levels of α2-macroglobulin (α2-MG), pregnancy-associated α2-glycoprotein (α2-PAG) and their immunocomplexes (α2-MG-IgG and α2-PAG-IgG). Twenty-four reproductive-age patients using COC for contraception during a year were examined over time. The authors estimated the serum levels of α2-MG and α2-PAG by quantitative rocket immunoelectrophoresis and those of immune complexes by enzyme immunoassay. During a year, the serum level of α2-PAG was found to be increased by 20.6 times in 83.3% of the women using a contraceptive containing 20 µg ethinyl estradiol and 150 µg desogestrel (Group 1) and by an average of 14 times in only 41.7% of those using an agent containing 20 µg ethinyl estradiol and 100 µg levonorgestrel (Group 2). There was a dynamic reduction in the blood immunocomplexes in Group 1 women and an increase in the α2-PAG-IgG complexes in Group 2 patients.
