Hematological parameters and serum hepsidin levels were studied in 13 non-anemiac women with physiological pregnancy, 50 pregnant women with chronic disease anemia, and 18 pregnant women with iron-deficiency anemia. A control group consisted of 10 healthy non-pregnant women. In third-trimester pregnancy women, the serum level of hepsidin was ascertained to be directly related to the frequency and severity of chronic inflammatory diseases (chronic adnexitis, ureaplasmosis, chlamydiasis). In chronic disease anemia, there was a significant increase in blood hepsidin levels as compared with those during physiological pregnancy while the level of hepsidin was decreased in iron-deficiency anemia.
