Abstract:

The orthognathic treatment makes it possible to change the patient's appearance within a very short time which inevitable alters his or her psychological status. The objective of the present work was to estimate the influence of orthognathic procedures on the psychological state of the patients and their satisfaction with the results of such treatment. To this effect, we examined 96 patients presenting with skeletal malocclusions before and after orthognathic treatment. The severity of malocclusion was estimated based on the results of a questionnaire survey and psychological tests using the facial aesthetic index (A.V. Kovalenko). It was shown that the orthognathic treatment has beneficial effect on the psychological status of the patients due to the enhanced self-confidence, sociability and improved emotional stability.
