We have carried out a comparative study to elucidate the influence of a Er:YAG laser and a scalpel on the reparative processes in the buccal mucous membrane of rats. The levels of proinflammatory interleukins-1-beta and -6 and anti-inflammatory interleukins -4 and -10 were measured on days 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 after the infliction of the wound. It has been shown that laser irradiation caused the increase in the levels of mucosal IL-1-beta and IL-6 within two and three days respectively. The levels of IL-4 and IL-10 grew at all time-points used in the study regardless of the mode of wound infliction, either by laser radiation or by the cutting tool. By day 7, these parameters were not significantly different between the groups. The data obtained give evidence of a more prominent leukocytic activity in a wound inflicted with a scalpel compared with that in the tissue affected by the laser.
