After endonasal surgery, inflammatory (non-infectious) changes of the nasal mucosa specific for post-traumatic rhinitis, which create favorable conditions for the secondary bacterial infection, have a negative impact on the quality of life of operated patients, occur. These changes determine the urgency of developing and implementing effective methods for reduction of the symptoms of post-traumatic rhinitis after septorhinoplasty in order to shorten the rehabilitation period.
OBJECTIVE
To study the impact of magnetotherapy on the frequency, severity and duration of postoperative rhinitis symptoms in patients who underwent septorhinoplasty.
PATIENTS AND METHODS
The study included 79 female patients and 21 male patients with various deformations of the external nose and intranasal structures.
Osteotomy was combined with septoplasty in 26 cases, with septoplasty and sparing inferior conchotomy — in 50, with submucosal vasotomy of the inferior nasal concha — in 16, with nasal valve plasty — in 8. All patients were randomly divided into 2 groups: the 1st group — 70 patients who underwent course of magnetotherapy after surgery; the 2nd group (control) — 30 patients who received 10 mg of dexamethasone intravenously. Magnetotherapy was carried out using «Magnit-Med TeKo» device («Med TeKo», Russia). The SNOT-22 questionnaire was used to assess subjective manifestations of post-traumatic (postoperative) rhinitis. Mucociliary clearance investigation was done with the help of «saccharin» test.
RESULTS
A decrease in the mean SNOT-22 score, values of which were significantly lower in presence of magnetotherapy application than in the control group during the entire follow-up period, has been noted starting from the 3th day after septorhinoplasty. «Saccharin time» by the end of the follow-up period (the 15th day after the surgery) in both groups did not reach physiological parameters, but this indicator was significantly lower in the study group than in the control.
CONCLUSION
The obtained data indicate a positive effect of magnetotherapy on the severity of subjective symptoms of post-traumatic rhinitis and activity of mucociliary clearance after septorhinoplasty.
