Features of clinical pathophysiological nasal mucosal changes in atrophic rhinitis

OBJECTIVE

To systematize information on clinical pathophysiological changes of mucous membrane in atrophic rhinitis, as well as to analyze modern data on the diagnosis and therapy of atrophic rhinitis.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The analysis of publications presented in eLibrary, PubMed/Medline, Scopus databases for the period from 1990 to 2021 has been conducted. Data from 42 sources, including 27 foreign ones, on issues of mucous membrane changes in atrophic rhinitis and therapy methods were used.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSION

Treatment of AR, despite the abundance of proposed therapeutic and surgical methods, remains a difficult and unsolved task, and the causes inducing atrophic changes in the mucous membrane require further study. Determination of causes that induce mucosal changes in the nasal cavity will allow to develop a personalized approach to the disease treatment.
