The paper first describes clinically significant extraintestinal infection caused by Blastocystis species in an atypical location (palatine tonsillar cyst) in a 43-year-old female patient after acute tonsillitis and concomitant fungal infection. It can be assumed that the appearance of Blastocystis and its colonization of tonsillar lymphoid tissue were as a secondary infectious process in the focus with an active structural lesion of the organ involved. The outcome of Blastocystis emergence in the area of changed barrier function of the organ colonized was in favor of the formation of a local inflammatory focus with the presence of different Blastocystis species in the contents of palatine tonsillar cyst. Verification of a chronic process in the pharyngeal lymphoid tissue significantly expands our understanding of the clinical significance of Blastocystis and it is of great interest to practitioners in the differential diagnosis of tonsillar tumor-like masses.
