Who was the first to discover the frontal sinuses in man has not been conclusively determined so far. It is customarily considered that the frontal sinuses were first described by A. Vesalius in 1543 (C. Chauveau, 1912). However, according to J.F. Blumenbach (1779), these were already known in 1514 thanks to J. Berengarius dа Carpi. S. Marquez (2008) claims that the frontal sinuses were first described by V. Coiter in 1534—1576 or 1590. Leonardo da Vinci is also often called to be among the first who discovered them. The distinguished eighteenth-century scientist A. Haller (1776) wrote that the ancient anatomists were even familiar with the frontal sinuses; however, he conveyed no specific information about this fact.
