Objective - to define indications for active anterior rhinomanometry (AARM) in children with otitis media with effusion (OME) in accordance with the degree of nasal obstruction. Subjects and methods. The study enrolled 60 patients (34 boys and 26 girls) including 54 (90±3.8%) children with bilateral OME and 6 (10±3.8%) with unilateral OME. According to the degree of labored nasal breathing, all the patients were divided into 2 groups: 1) those with moderate nasal obstruction and 2) those with severe nasal obstruction. Nasal breathing and otitis media were examined 6 months after adenoidectomy. Results. After adenoidectomy, there were positive AARM changes in the majority of patients (86.5%) and a decrease in the rate of abnormal tympanograms. Conclusion. Thus, AARM has shown that the degree of labored nasal breathing correlates with the incidence of abnormal tympanograms, which should be considered when defining indications for adenoidectomy in children with OME-associated nasal obstruction.
