The International Classification of Diseases and Health-related Problems (ICD) is the world standard for health data collection, clinical records and statistics for all general epidemiological and healthcare management purposes. The World Health Organization announced the 1st of January 2022 yr. as the official date of ICD-11 entry into force. The implementation of ICD, the transition to its next revision application in the USSR and in the post-Soviet period was done gradually, not always consistently and centrally, but the invaluable experience of this process is certainly useful and can be applied in the country’s transition to the eleventh revision. The experience of ICD-10 implementation and use in foreign countries was presented, a number of common problems related to the implementation, updating, support and distribution of the classification in the world, which have a certain impact on the statistics of the morbidity and mortality of the population, were highlighted. The pilot implementation of ICD-11 has shown that the success and duration of the transition to ICD-11 is particularly dependent on the involvement of interested parties, the complexity of the healthcare system and the degree of information technology introduction, including in the financial system. The experience of ICD-11 implementation and use, including the ICD-11 pilot implementation, has shown that the process of ICD-11 promotion requires a global approach to the realization of a range of activities with taking into account the opinions of all interested parties, despite multidimensional country differences, to ensure the reliability of healthcare statistics, methodological coherence and international comparability of population’s morbidity and mortality statistics.
