OBJECTIVE
To assess the availability and affordability of fruit and vegetables for the population of municipalities of the pilot region of the Russian Federation using specialized software developed by the National Medical Research Center for Therapy and Preventive Medicine.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
In the Russian Federation, an observational study on the assessment of the infrastructure in municipalities and the analysis of infrastructure element associations with the prevalence of behavioral risk factors for major chronic non-communicable diseases is conducted as part of the state assignment “Development of a comprehensive system for the assessment of a unified preventive environment for health and healthy lifestyle promotion at the municipal/regional level”. This article presents the results of the first stage of the pilot study, which assessed the current state of infrastructure in the Sverdlovsk region municipalities (grocery stores, supermarkets, fairs/markets, stalls with a selection of fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as catering outlets (fast food outlets, cafes, restaurants, etc.). The affordability of fresh fruit and vegetables to the population was assessed by calculating the average minimum prices at various points of sale. Statistical processing was performed using SPSS 20 software (IBM, USA).
RESULTS
Grocery stores and supermarkets are expected to be the main elements of the trade network, providing the population with fresh fruit and vegetables. However, only 66% of grocery stores and supermarkets have fresh fruit and vegetable departments. Prices for fresh fruit and vegetables offered in stalls were higher than prices for comparable products in supermarkets.
CONCLUSION
Implementing measures to increase the availability and affordability of fresh fruit and vegetables to the population is possible by stimulating consumer demand. Regional programs to support the most vulnerable groups, especially low-income families, can be introduced in this regard. In addition, financial measures are needed to support the construction of supermarkets and grocery stores with a broad assortment of fruit and vegetables.
