The government of the Russian Federation is taking an increasingly active part in the development of the country’s sports infrastructure and in the increase of the general level of involvement of the population in regular physical education and sports, which is enshrined in the state program «Development of physical education and sports in the Russian Federation for 2016—2020». This program focuses on achieving certain target indicators in different population categories and covers the activity of all subjects of Russia in ensuring the accessibility of sports facilities for the population and the latter’s awareness of the importance of physical activity in maintaining and preserving physical health. This paper analyzes how the regions are effective in achieving the expected indicators for certain target categories of the population.
