Abstract:

INTRODUCTION

Cloacal malformations are rare congenital malformations that are the most severe and complex form of anorectal and urogenital malformations. Patients born with a persistent cloaca are always women in whom, at the stage of embryogenesis, the lower parts of the urethra, vagina and rectum merge into a single canal or cavity that opens posterior to the clitoris. A persistent cloaca remains a difficult reconstructive problem for the pediatric gynecologist, urologist and surgeon.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Data searches were conducted in PubMed, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Library. The following keywords were used: cloacal anomalies, persistent cloaca, long-term management and outcomes.

CONCLUSION

Although short-term pediatric outcomes are now well reported, long-term adult follow-up should also remain under the care of specialized multidisciplinary teams familiar with the management of persistent cloaca and other complex congenital malformations.
