Abstract:

Breast asymmetry is defined as a discrepancy between the shape, volume, position of mammary glands or nipple-areolar complex, as well as combination of these abnormalities. According to the literature, approximately 88% of women have certain breast asymmetry. For many women, asymmetry per se can be an obvious aesthetic problem impairing quality of life. Optimal methods and algorithms for surgical correction of breast asymmetry have been developed for many years. To date, different approaches are used depending on the type of asymmetry. However, there is still no consensus on optimal approach and their combination for a particular issue. We present a patient with congenital breast asymmetry who underwent symmetrical mastopexy with implants of different sizes and designs. Preoperative and postoperative morphometry was performed to assess preoperative asymmetry and achievement of symmetry after surgery. Breast asymmetry is a serious problem for plastic surgeons. Our strategy implies symmetrical procedure for each gland while correction of different volumes is performed by implants of different sizes and designs.
