THE PURPOSE

To study the features of the topography and individual anatomical variability of the motor branches of the peripheral nerves of the upper limb.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The features of the external structure and topography of the motor branches of peripheral nerves on 32 upper extremities of fixed corpses were studied by the method of precision dissection under optical magnification.

RESULTS

The average values of the length of the motor branches, as well as the levels of the location of the neurovascular gates of the muscles of the shoulder and forearm relative to the bony landmarks, were determined. The dependence of the length of motor branches on individual differences in the shape of the external structure of individual segments of the limbs was revealed. The potential possibility of studying the features of the structure and topography of peripheral nerves by ultrasound scanning on a fixed anatomical material with subsequent confirmation of the obtained data by traditional methods has been determined.

CONCLUSION

The presented results demonstrate the number and length of the motor branches of the peripheral nerves of the upper limb, and also indicate the location of the main neurovascular gates of the muscles relative to the bony landmarks. The revealed correlations between the shape of the limb segment and the characteristics of the peripheral nerves indicate the presence of more isolated motor branches for some muscles (brachial, brachioradial, and flexor pollicis longus) in relatively long and narrow segments in comparison with relatively short and wide limbs.
