Clinical cytology was formed as an independent medical specialty according to the morphological diagnosis of diseases more than half a century ago. The organization of a cytological service in the USSR healthcare system has contributed to the high efficiency of cytological diagnosis and to a significant reduction in cervical cancer morbidity and mortality rates from cervical cancer. The paper describes the state-of-the-art of clinical cytology in the Russian Federation and discusses cytological diagnostic problems. It is shown that the identification of the specialty «clinical cytology» and the approval of the professional standard «clinical cytologist» are a necessary measure to create a system for training qualified specialists, to improve the quality of cytological diagnosis, and to develop the latter in Russia.
