Abstract:

OBJECTIVE

To describe the first clinical results obtained with 90Y-containing microspheres produced in the Russian Federation.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

In April to December 2019, five patients (4 men and 1 woman) aged 60 to 76 years underwent 6 liver radioembolizations with 90Y-containing microspheres (Russian Federation) at the A.F. Tsyb Medical Radiology Research Center, a branch of the National Medical Radiology Research Center, Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation. Out of 5 patients, 4 had hepatocellular cancer (HCC), 1 patient had cholangiocellular cancer (CCC).

RESULTS

The technical success rate of surgery was 100%. After 99mTc-MAA SPECT/CT, there was no accumulation of radiopharmaceuticals in the organs of the gastrointestinal tract in any patients; pulmonary bypass ranged from 1 to 4.5%. No intraoperative complications were observed. The follow-up period was 13 to 22 months. All the patients were alive. Two patients with HCC obtained a partial response. One patient developed an abscess at the tumor site, followed by fibrosis. Diagnostic X-ray showed that a complete response was achieved in another patient; he could be operated on and a morphological examination revealed no tumor cells. Stabilization was achieved in the patient with CCC.

CONCLUSION

Our first experience with the microspheres produced in Russia has demonstrated their high efficacy, which makes it possible to continue work in this direction.
