Abstract:

Reference interval (RI) is a central 95% range of reference values (RV) set by 2 limits. Being a statistical parameter RI reflects between-individual variation in population. It has limitations in test result interpretation for analytes with low individuality index. Comparison RI with decision limits is presented in the review. Authors described the protocol for establishment of RI by direct methods including discussion of inclusion/exclusion criteria. The review contains requirements and limitations of different statistical methods applications to calculate RI and their confidence intervals. Several methods recommended to partition RI are considered. Upcoming indirect approach in establishing RI (data mining) is presented. It based on the statistical handing of data from hospital information systems to select RV from healthy individuals. The procedure to transfer RI in case of different analytical system is described. Authors also presented scheme of RI verification by the lab with identical analytical systems but serving the population different from the original RI study published. Alternative methods of verification used comparison of RV midpoint and flag rates are considered.
