The article provides an overview of venereologic dispensaries’ activity in the 1920s, statistics on the incidence of gonorrhoea, the then existing methods of treatment, prevention and approaches to educative activities. Sexually transmitted diseases were proposed to be considered not as bad or secret, but as social, along with tuberculosis and alcohol dependence according to the ‘disease is not a shame, but an unhappiness’ concept. The idea of sexually transmitted diseases’ social origin partly reduced their stigmatization and allowed their public discussion. Refusal of awkward topics suppression in sanitary propaganda materials, namely leaflets, posters, mock sanitary courts, etc. raised public awareness and normalized public discussion of issues surrounding sexually transmitted diseases. Various aspect of work of Tsaritsyn (Stalingrad) venereologic dispensary, opened in October 1023, are considered on the example of declaration letter of citizen E.I., survived in the funds of the Russian Museum of Medicine and first presented in the publication, to N.A. Semashko, People’s Commissar for Health of the RSFSR. This letter to the seat of authority, as well as the popular in this epoch questionnaires on the sexual issue, give an idea about the treatment, diagnostic and preventive activity of the venereologic service in the 1920s and the medical education success of the early the early XX century. The letter from E.I. provides clear evidence that the patient is aware of the disease, the routes of infection, visited, as prescribed in medical leaflets and brochures, doctors rather than healers, believed in the possibility of recovery and did not conceal the proven diagnosis.
