Abstract:

INTRODUCTION

The quality and effectiveness of syphilis detection and contact screening was an issue during the epidemic of the 1990s and in the early years of declining incidence. Currently, this issue is little discussed in the literature and is not the focus of clinician attention. The present paper is devoted to the analysis of this problem and indicates its relevance.

OBJECTIVE

To review quality and performance indicators of dermatovenerologists of the Russian Federation in detecting and examining sexual and domestic contacts of patients with syphilis trending over a long time and revealing trends.

RESULTS

A clear downward trend in the number of contacts examined per syphilis patient over the past 30 years is observed. Decreasing detection of syphilis infection among sexual contacts is also shown. The obtained data show that syphilis is not uncommon among contacts of patients with late syphilis. The significant role of household contact examination in all forms of syphilis was shown.

CONCLUSION

The issue of examining contacts of syphilis patients is urgent and requires the attention of physicians and thoroughness in carrying out this work.
